What We Do:
Affordable transportation to and within the Kansas City metro area often lacks in reach and connectivity, resulting in a restrained radius of economic opportunity for those that are struggling financially. The inability to commute in an efficient and timely manner to large portions of the metro leads to an inability to obtain and retain jobs.
Dart addresses these challenges by retrofitting inexpensive traditional bicycles to run with the assistance of battery electric power. E-biking empowers the individual, expanding their radius of self controlled transportation, while allowing for greater freedom in both their professional and personal lives. This service may be purchased at either a market rate or at a reduced rate based upon an application process which determines the appropriate level of financial assistance required. An included bus pass will assist on those days when the weather is a concern.
Outcomes:
We expected to be fully operational by Spring 2020, but currently the project is still in the developmental phase and has not yet attained outcomes due to COVID-19. Our engineering team is presently occupied with product prototyping and testing, with the rest of the team staying busy conducting and analyzing surveys, pursuing community partnerships, and reviewing potential funding opportunities.
On a good note, we have completed our prototype 1.0 – Dart bike – and we are working everyday to make improvements! We also had the pleasure of competing in the EQ Pitch Competition, TCU Competition, and recently won $1,000 as the Outstanding Social Innovation at the Regnier Venture Creation Challenge!
Get Involved with Dart:
There are several ways to help us improve the lives of those affected by transportation issues in our community:
- Our Survey: The data collected from this survey is critical for potential funding opportunities, and to ensure we are providing solutions that our community needs and wants.
- Students: Join our Enactus Project! We are currently building our team and need students with a wide range of skills and interests. This project will be a great fit if you are interested in humanitarian efforts, entrepreneurial planning and organizing, environmental concerns, transportation issues, and more. Join our team meeting at 12:30PM in BEH 327
- Community Organizations: Let’s discuss how Dart can bolster your efforts of improving the lives of those you serve.
- Funding Opportunities: While we are currently bootstrapping the project, we are exploring a variety of potential funding opportunities, including grants, crowdfunding, and investors.
